Prior to Friends of Winthrop Lake, there was an organization called Winthrop Lake Watershed Association, that amongst other achievements, organized several fun and educational awareness events. They were also successful in organizing productive invasive Water Chestnut weed pull events.

The Chestnut pull was a successful annual event that drew on volunteers from the community to come together and gently remove the invasive weed by hand.
